Why Fall Is Actually a Great Time to Buy a Houseplant

While everyone else is reaching for pumpkins and mums, why not bring home something that will keep growing long after Halloween is over? Most people think of spring as the season for new plants, but fall is one of the best times to bring a new plant home. The change of season is a great excuse to take a fresh look around. Sometimes, we simply get used to seeing our homes the same way every day.

Choose a Plant That Fits Your Space

Some houseplants that tend to do well in lower light, drier indoor air, and cooler temperatures include snake plants, pothos, ZZ plants, and spider plants. They’re also great options if you’re looking for relatively easy-care indoor plants.

Before bringing a new plant home, consider where you’d like to put it. How much natural light does the space get? Is it near a heater or drafty window? Do you tend to forget to water, or are you more likely to water a little too often? Finding a plant that matches your space and your routine can make all the difference.

Plants need Extra Attention in Fall

Your houseplants’ needs can change as the seasons do. A plant that was thriving in a bright summer window may get significantly less light as the days get shorter. Indoor heating can also make the air drier.

You may need to move plants closer to a window, adjust your watering routine, or simply keep an eye on how your plants are responding. And remember, less sunlight often means slower growth, so your plants may not need as much water or fertilizer as they did during the growing season.

How to choose the right plant

That’s where we can help. Take a picture of your space and bring it with you to Happy Day Plants in downtown Longmont. We can look at your light, space, and style and help you find an indoor plant that’s a good fit. If you have any empty pot around the house, we can help you find the right fit and pot it at our Potting Bar in the shop.
